Bulgarian Cost of Living
Planning your expenses…
Living in Bulgaria is relatively cheap. Compared to costs of living in Britain, France, Germany, or Spain, Bulgaria can really be considered as an inexpensive country in which to reside. That is one of the main reasons businesses or retired individuals choose Bulgaria to operate or spend their years of retirement.
Starting from the moment you arrive at one of the 4 major Bulgarian airports you'll need a taxi. Taxi services can very from place to place. For instance, getting one of “OK” taxis at Sofia Intl Airport to the central bus or train station will cost you approximately 4-10 EUR.
Getting a quick snack from a café or a fast food restaurant would be from 1-3 EUR per person. Soft drinks cost no more than a euro and beer can be as cheap as a few euro cents. Please, bear in mind that if you visit a 5-star establishment they could charge you more just because you pay for the little extra that you get (a world-class service and environment).
A bus ticket from Sofia to the most distant place in Bulgaria would be approximately 10-12 EUR. That's how much you'll pay to get from the capital to the Black Sea coast on the coach. At this stage we would recommend you travel by bus rather than train for you will get from point A to point B faster and you will feel more comfortable. If you are ready to spend an extra euro you can get on the internal flight from Sofia to Varna with Hemus Air for as little as 50-60 EUR. This is entirely up to you.
If you are on a self-catering basis while you are in Bulgaria money is not a BIG issue. Just go to one of the newly built ultra modern state of the art supermarkets such as Metro, Billa, Kaufland, CBA, Piccadilly, etc and get a loaf of bread for as little as 0.30 EUR, milk for nearly the same price, sugar for no more than a euro, juice for 0.75 EUR, fresh organic vine tomatoes for less than a euro per kilo, organic eggs for 0.10 EUR per egg, and your breakfast is done and dusted. Feta cheese as it is widely known will cost you approx 2 EUR per kilo. (Historically, Thracian people who inhabited the Bulgarian land invented this kind of cheese).
