The town of Silistra (population: 42 153; 20 m above sea-level) is situated on the right (Bulgarian) bank of the river Danube, on 375th kilometres away from the river mouth, at the point where the river enters the territory of Romania and the terrestrial boundary between Bulgaria and Romania begins.

The region of Salistra falls into the moderate continental European climatic area, which is characteristic for its cold winter and dry warm summer. The average annual temperature amplitude is around 26° and is one of the country's highest temperatures.
Silistra - Local Interests
The Srebarna Nature Reserve is a freshwater lake adjacent to the Danube and extending over 900 hectares. It is situated in North East Bulgaria in the Province of Silistra, 16 km west of the town of Silistra and 1 km south of the Danube.
It is the breeding ground of almost 100 species of birds, 24 of which are rare or endangered. Some 80 other bird species migrate and seek refuge there every winter. Among the most interesting bird species are the Dalmatian pelican, great egret, night heron, purple heron, glossy ibis and white spoonbill.
